IDDT Finland . IDDT Finland Novo Nordisk announced that production of beef Lente insulin during the year 2001 with the expectation that it would remain available in Finland until the year 2002. People using Lente were very concerned about their future because many of them had already experienced problems with ‘human’ insulin and they raised their concerns the Diabetes Association of Finland and IDDT. Discussions took place about the possibility of obtaining beef insulins from CP Pharmaceuticals Ltd, producers of natural animal insulins in the UK in both vials and cartridges for pen injection devices. Ten years ago a group formed called the ‘Conservative Diabetics’ and their aims were: · to help people who needed animal insulin to obtain it. · to provide information to other people who may have problems with ‘human’ insulin and who do not necessarily associate the problems with their insulin. · to influence the authorities so that animal insulins are easily accessible to the people who need them. This Group became part of IDDT-International to fight to obtain and maintain supplies of animal insulins for the people that need them. They joined Australia, Canada, Germany, the UK, the US and Switzerland in trying to ensure that animal insulins remain available and that people with diabetes have the choice of insulins to suit their individual needs.
Availability of Hypurin Bovine Lente Hypurin Bovine Lente 100u/ml in 10ml vials The distributor is:
Tamro OYJ/AP Ledger CP are seeking approval in Finland for Hypurin Bovine Neutral 100u/ml in 10ml vials and small amounts of this can be obtained from the above distributor. Clearly there is also the need for short-acting bovine insulins. If you live in Finland and need bovine insulins, then write to the Finnish Agency for Medicines and explain this to them. The action to achieve marketing authority for Bovine Lente came largely as a result of the pressure from the people with diabetes who need this particular insulin. If the same pressure is applied for the other insulins that are needed, then we are hopeful that marketing authority will be granted again. Summary of animal insulin availability July 2003 As with other countries where Novo Nordisk have discontinued supplies of animal insulin, there are people in Finland who are only able to achieve satisfactory diabetic control and feel well when using animal insulins. We would add that there may be a lack of awareness of this availability, so it may be necessary to be a little insistent that your facts correct! As IDDT understand the present situation is as follows: · CP Hypurin Bovine Lente is fully registered with an approved price in Finland. · Small amounts of Hypurin Bovine Neutral are available or can be imported from the UK if necessary. · Novo Nordisk have confirmed that they will supply their pork insulins until 2005
